Towards robust methods to couple lumpedrainfall–runoff models and hydraulic models:A sensitivity analysis on the Illinois RiverJulien Lerat a , Charles Perrin a,∗ , Vazken Andréassian a ,Cécile Loumagne a , Pierre Ribstein ba Cemagref, Hydrosystems research unit, Parc de Tourvoie, 92163 Antony Cedex,tel-00392240, version 1 - 5 Jun 2009Franceb UPMC Univ Paris 06, UMR 7619 Sisyphe, Case 105, 4 Place Jussieu, 75252Paris, Cedex 05, FranceAbstractAccurate prediction of a flood inundation area constitutes an essential part ofa flood forecasting system. When a river reach receives important lateral inflows, flood inundation modelling requires the joint application of a hydrological modelto calculate lateral inflows and a hydraulic model to calculate water levels alongthe river reach. In this study, we compared different strategies to couple the GR4Jlumped rainfall-runoff model and the linearised diffusive wave propagation model. These strategies introduced variations in the nature of the connections between thetwo models using combinations of point and uniformly distributed lateral injections. The coupled model was then applied to the Illinois River case study for which 10years of hourly data were made available within the Distributed Model IntercomparisonProject, now in phase 2. The simulations were assessed at the downstreamPreprint submitted to Elsevier 18 May 2009
