In a narrative <strong>review</strong> of 16 studies on the diagnosis and therapy of breast diseases during<br />

lactation the author, Abou-Dakn concludes there is no indication <strong>for</strong> weaning in case of<br />

breast abscess. In the management of breast abscess Abou-Dakn states that needle aspiration<br />

should be favored over surgical intervention. Needle aspiration is cheaper, less painful and<br />

allows a faster convalescence. Surgical drainage preferred method if abscess is large, or if<br />

there are multiple present (Abou-Dakn, Richardt et al. 2010).<br />

The WHO recommend aspirating pus in the breast with a syringe and wide bore needle to<br />

confirm the presence of an abscess (WHO 2000).<br />
