In a narrative review of 16 studies on the diagnosis and therapy of breast diseases during
lactation the author, Abou-Dakn concludes there is no indication for weaning in case of
breast abscess. In the management of breast abscess Abou-Dakn states that needle aspiration
should be favored over surgical intervention. Needle aspiration is cheaper, less painful and
allows a faster convalescence. Surgical drainage preferred method if abscess is large, or if
there are multiple present (Abou-Dakn, Richardt et al. 2010).
The WHO recommend aspirating pus in the breast with a syringe and wide bore needle to
confirm the presence of an abscess (WHO 2000).
