Expression and Breastfeeding duration An insufficient number of studies were available to make a formal evidence statement. All three cohort studies available showed that mothers who expressed breastmilk had a longer duration of breastfeeding. In several narrative reviews or uncontrolled studies, expression of breastmilk was advocated as an appropriate measure to enable mothers to return to employment and continue breastfeeding. More research on breastmilk expression and breastfeeding outcomes is needed. 290
