Notes on Methodology Used in this Review<br />

Cultural and environmental factors have a great influence on infant feeding practices. The<br />

countries and regions of the birth places of mothers of children born in Australia in 2008 are<br />

listed below. This is the most recent year <strong>for</strong> which data are available<br />

United Kingdom 3.3%<br />

India 1.6%<br />

Vietnam 1.6%<br />

China 1.5%<br />

Other 14.2%<br />

Regions of mothers’ birth:<br />

Australia NZ 77.8<br />

NW Europe 3.3<br />

N Africa, Mid East 2.7<br />

Sub Saharan Africa 1.7<br />

Total Overseas 22<br />

The ‘other countries’ group includes more than 100 additional countries.<br />

Limitations on literature searches:<br />

Countries. To ensure relevance of the literature <strong>review</strong> on factors that effect duration and<br />

initiation of breastfeeding the searches will be limited to the above countries. Where issues<br />

are not so specifically related to cultural conditions within a country, e.g. the management of<br />

mastitis or listing drugs that should not be used during lactation, a wider range of countries<br />

will be included.<br />

Language. The literature searches were limited to the English language.<br />

Birth weight restrictions. The literature <strong>review</strong> will be limited to infants of normal<br />

birthweight (ie > 2500 grams). The management of very low birthweight infants requires<br />

specialised care until normal birthweight ranges are achieved.<br />

Time Period. Generally the literature will be limited to the time period since the preparation<br />

of the literature <strong>review</strong>s <strong>for</strong> the Third Edition of the Infant Feeding Guidelines (2002). The<br />
