The safety of breastfeeding in HVV-positive mothers depends on the absence of traumatized,<br />

cracked, or bleeding nipples. HCV-positive mothers should consider abstaining from<br />

breastfeeding if their nipples are cracked or bleeding (Roberts and Yeung 2002; Airoldi and<br />

Berghella 2006).<br />

For the HCV/HIV-co-infected mother, the recommendation <strong>for</strong> breastfeeding should be based<br />

on the current HIV care recommendations; breastfeeding is discouraged in women who have<br />

consistent access to safe infant <strong>for</strong>mula (Airoldi and Berghella 2006).<br />
