12 FATS AND OILS (S1.1)
FATS AND OILS and CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Two cohort studies (both O) of infant diet and cardiovascular disease. One, (Ohlund et al., 2008) looked
at infant diet and then serum cholesterol over a six month period and found that PUFA is protective of
lipid profile, and quality of the fat is important in an infant diet. The second cohort (Ness et al. 2005)
measured childhood diet and followed up after 30 and 50 years with mortality data in adults. SFA and
total fat in childhood diet found to be protective of all cause mortality and deaths attributable to
cardiovascular disease. The second of these studies findings are not consistent with adult disease
findings. These studies were not included in the body of evidence statement.
