Insufficient evidence for infants.
Generalisability Good Population studies in body of evidence similar to the
target population for the guideline
Applicability Excellent Directly applicable to Australian healthcare context.
A level I meta-analysis of 10 trials in children and adolescents (N = 966) found that Na restriction over a
median intervention of 4 weeks resulted in significant reductions in blood pressure (systolic: -1.17 mm
Hg; diastolic: - 1.29 mm Hg). In the same meta-analysis, three trials of infants (N = 551) with a median
duration of 20 weeks found a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure of -2.47 mm Hg. Further
long-term studies are needed to assess whether Na restriction in early childhood result in beneficial BP
reductions later in life but at the present time there is enough evidence to warrant a body of evidence
statement in this age group.
