Ils avaient supplié Janie de rester avec They had begged Janie to stay on
pour ne pas les vexer. Mais le bourbier lui weeks to keep them from feeling bad.
parlait de Ptit-Four et Ptit-Four n’était plus 5 But the muck meant Tea Cake and Tea
So it was just a
étendue de boue noire. Elle avait distribué great expanse of black mud. She had
tout ce que contenait leur petite maison, à given away everything in their little
house except a package of garden seed
que Ptit-Four avait acheté. I1 ne les 10 that Tea Cake had bought to plant. The
avaient jamais plantées parce qu’il attendait planting never got done because he had
lui rappelaient Ptit-Four plus que tout le The seeds reminded Janie of Tea Cake
reste, car il était toujours à planter. Elle les 15 more than anything else because he
serviette.
« Voilà comment ça s’est passé, “Now, dat’s how everything wuz,
Phoeby, tout comme jte dis. À présent, Pheoby, jus’ lak Ah told yuh. So Ah’m
jsuis de rtour chez moi et bien contente 30 back home agin and Ah’m satisfied tuh be
plus remplie d’absences, comme avant
que Ptit-Four arrive. L’est pleine de
was always planting things. She had
noticed them on the kitchen shelf when
she came home from the funeral and
had put them in her breast pocket. Now
20 that she was home, she meant to plant
them for remembrance.
Janie stirred her strong feet in
the pan of water. The tiredness was
25 gone so she dried them off on the
towel.
heah. Ah done been tuh de horizon and
back and now Ah kin set heah in mah
house and live by comparisons. Dis house
ain’t so absent of things lak it used tuh be
35 befo’ Tea Cake come along. It’s full uh
No había tenido
vida plantando flores y plantas.
He ido hasta el horizonte y he vuelto,
y ahora me puedo sentar en mi casa y
vivir haciendo comparaciones.
memory of Tea Cake vanquishes the sadness and
fills Janie with an understanding of all that she
has gained and become.
Janie has already realized that suffering and
sacrifice are necessary steps on the path toward
self-discovery. In The Natural (1952), Bernard
Malamud writes: «We have two lives … the life
we learn with and the life we live with after that.
Suffering is what brings us toward happiness.»
This maxim is certainly applicable to Janie’s
situation. She has grown, struggled, and
suffered; having found her voice, she is now able
to begin anew. Although the body of her lover is
gone, his legacy remains with her, in the person
that she has become. She has achieved the unity
with nature that she sought so long ago under
the pear tree. Although the forces of the world
may be unknowable and at times painful, she is
at peace with them. Her act of «pull[ing] in her
horizon» around herself reflects the harmony
that she has finally established with the world
around her. She has found true love, which has
enabled her to find her voice.
This final image of Janie «pull[ing] in her
horizon» contrasts with the opening image of
men’s «[s]hips at a distance.» These
metaphorical ships suggest that regardless of
their ultimate success or failure, men dream of
great accomplishments, of working on and
changing their external worlds. Even if the ship
comes in, it still originates as something
external. Janie’s pulling in her horizon shifts the
field of action to the interior. Her quest requires
experience of the world, of other people and
places, but it is ultimately directed inward.
Jsais qutous ces bavards-assis vont “Ah know all dem sitters-and-talkers
- Seigneur ! soupira lourdement “Lawd!” Pheoby breathed out
—Bueno, Pheoby, tú no te enfades
