Ils luttaient de plus belle.
Pero Tea Cake no la soltaba. Siguieron
peleando hasta que sus propios olores
que sus ropas quedaron hechas jirones;
- Naan, jl’ai jamais aimée et tu lsais
bien. J’avais pas envie d’elle.
The next morning janie asked like a woman,
35 “You still love ole Nunkie?”
“Naw, never did, and you know it too.
Ah didn’t want her.”
—¿Sigues queriendo a esa Nunkie?
Yo
nunca la he querío.
- Si, tu la voulais. » Elle ne le disait pas 40 “Yeah, you did.” She didn’t say
parce qu’elle y croyait. Elle voulait this because she believed it. She
entendre ses dénégations. Elle avait besoin wanted to hear his denial. She had
“Whut would Ah do wid dat lil chunk
lao? Ella no sirve ná má que pa ponerla
en un rincón de la cocina y
usar su cabeza pa partir leña. Contigo
un hombre se olvida de la vejez
y de la muerte. [157]
CHAPTER 16
CAPÍTULO 16
Chapter 16
The season closed and people went
away like they had come—in droves.
Tea Cake and Janie decided to stay
since they wanted to make another
season on the muck. There was
nothing to do, after they had
gathered several bushels of dried
beans to save over and sell to the
planters in the fall. So Janie began
to look around and see people and
things she hadn’t noticed during
the season.
Tea Cake y Janie decidieron quedarse,
ya que querían hacer otra temporada en
la tierra negra. Una vez que hubieran recogido
varios bushels de judías secas
para guardarlos y vendérselos a los
plantadores en otoño, ya no quedaba mucho
que hacer. Entonces Janie empezó a
observar los alrededores y a descubrir
personas y cosas que no había advertido
durante la temporada.
The season ends, and Janie and Tea Cake decide
to stay around for another year. During the
off-season, there isn’t much to do, so Janie
spends more time socializing. She hangs out a
little with the exotic Bahamians that live in the
muck but spends most of her time with Mrs.
Turner. Although she is black, Mrs. Turner, a
funny-looking, conceited woman, talks all the
time about the evils of black people. She loves
whiteness and argues that black people are lazy
and foolish and that they should try to «lighten
up de race.» She dislikes the dark-skinned Tea
Cake and wants Janie to marry her light-skinned
brother.
Tea Cake overhears a conversation between
