Janie n’avait jamais eu
l’occasion de rien savoir, aussi dut-elle
demander. Le mariage mettait-il fin à la
solitude cosmique de qui est sans époux ?
Le mariage imposaitil l’amour comme le
soleil le jour ?
CHAPTER 3
There are years that ask questions
and years that answer. Janie had had
no chance to know things, so she had
to ask. Did marriage end the cosmic
loneliness of the unmated? Did
35 marriage compel love like the sun
the day?
In the few days to live before she
souvent cités, Janie s’interrogea en dedans inside of herself and out. She was back
et en dehors. Elle revenait sans cesse au and forth to the pear tree continuously
poirier, s’interrogeait, réfléchissait de façon wondering and thinking. Finally out of
continue. Pour finir, des réflexions de Nanny’s talk and her own conjectures
Nounou et de ses propres conjectures, elle 45 she made a sort of comfort for herself.
tira une sorte de réconfort. Oui, elle Yes, she would love Logan after they
aimerait Logan après leur mariage. Elle ne were married. She could see no way for
voyait pas très bien comment, mais si it to come about, but Nanny and the old
Nounou et les vieux l’affirmaient, il devait folks had said it, so it must be so.
en être ainsi. Maris et femmes s’aimaient 50 Husbands and wives always loved each
toujours, et c’était là le sens du mariage. other, and that was what marriage meant.
C’était ainsi. Cette pensée [53] réconforta It was just so. Janie felt glad of the
Janie, car il lui parut alors moins thought, for then it wouldn’t seem so
destructeur et moins moisi. Elle ne serait destructive and mouldy. She wouldn’t be
plus esseulée.
55 lonely anymore.
Janie and Logan got married in
Nanny’s parlor of a Saturday evening
with three cakes and big platters of fried
60 rabbit and chicken. Everything to eat in
abundance. Nanny and Mrs. Washburn
had seen to that. But nobody put
anything on the seat of Logan’s wagon
to make it ride glorious on the way to
his house. It was a lonesome place like
a stump in the middle of the woods
where nobody had ever been. The house
was [20] absent of flavor, too. But
anyhow Janie went on inside to wait for
love to begin. The new moon had been
up and down three times before she got
worried in mind. Then she went to see
Nanny in Mrs. Washburn’s kitchen on
the day for beaten biscuits.
Nanny beamed all out with gladness
and made her come up to the bread
board so she could kiss her.
Janie. He trabajao duro y he comprao este
Aquello estaba
bien mientra eras pequeña. Pero cuando
te hiciste mayor, yo quise que aprendieras
a cuidar de ti misma. Yo no quiero que
estés siempre acobardada por las cosas
que la gente pueda echarte en cara. Y no
me moriría tranquila pensando que tal vez
los hombres, sean blancos o negros, están
usándote como escupidera. Ten compasión
de mí. Trátame con cariño, Janie. No soy
más que un cascajo... [38]
tranquilidad. Sí, ella amaría a Logan una
vez se hubieran casado. No veía cómo
algo tan destructivo y aburrido. Nunca
poder besarla. [38]
Summary
Chapter 3
As Janie prepares for her marriage to Logan,
she understands that she doesn’t love him but
assumes that after marriage, love will come
naturally, as Nanny has been telling her. The
wedding is a big, festive affair, but two months
later, Janie visits Nanny to ask for advice; she
fears that she will never love Logan. Nanny
berates Janie for not appreciating Logan’s
wealth and status. She sends Janie on her way,
again telling her that, in time, she will develop
feelings for Logan. After Janie leaves, Nanny
prays to God to care for Janie, saying that she,
Nanny, has done the best that she could. A
month later, she dies. A year passes, and Janie
still feels no love for Logan and becomes even
more disillusioned.
