Although His Majesty was making such visits to the high security risk areas out
of his deep concern and compassion for the well-being of his people, the
Councillor appealed for the royal visits to the high risk areas to be curtailed.
The primary reason for the attacks on the Bhutanese people by the BLT was
because of the presence in Bhutan of the ULFA and NDFB militants with whom
they had differences in their political goals. In light of this it was important to
make the militants leave Bhutan as soon as possible.
The Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongda reported that because of the close relations
between the Royal Government and the Assam State Government, the Assam
civil and police officials extended their cooperation when Bhutanese people
including innocent students were heinously attacked and killed on Highway 31
last December. They provided information and timely assistance and medical
treatment to the victims of the unprovoked attack which saved the lives of many
Bhutanese who were injured in the tragic incident.
The registration officer of the Dzongkhag, Sonam Dorji along with driver
Tandin Dorji were kidnapped by the BLT while traveling from Phuentsholing to
Samdrup Jongkhar carrying office equipment worth Nu.1.5 million. The new
Toyota Hilux vehicle in which they were travelling was completely burnt.
