The honourable members of the National Assembly were able to see for themselves the progress of the reconstruction of Taktshang Lhakhang. The people of Paro and those involved in the reconstruction work are therefore, deeply satisfied. It is expected that the remaining works could be completed within the year. The Paro Chimi extended the gratitude of the people of Paro to His Majesty the King, and the Royal Government. The Hon’ble Home Minister said that the people have expressed gratitude for the reconstruction of Paro Taktshang in previous sessions of the National Assembly, and requested for reports on the progress made. This suggests that not only the people of Bhutan, but devotees all around the world have great faith and respect for the most blessed site of Guru Rinpoche. Although a total of 14 months have gone since the reconstruction works of Paro Taktshang has begun, five winter months were not conducive for continuing the works. Therefore, only nine months have been actually spent. As submitted by the Paro Chimi, not only have the Sertog been installed on Droley and Pelphug Lhakhang within this short time, but the reconstruction of the two Lhakhang has been completed adorning them with spectacular exterior paintings. The reconstruction of Tshepame and Neykhang Lhakhang are also almost completed. The timbers used for the reconstruction of Paro Taktshang are all cypress tree. It is very appropriate that such sacred and blessed Lhakhang are built of such timbers. Besides, the cypress can withstand the vagaries of weather be it intense heat or rainfall, and are also resistant to insects for a long time. When the Taktshang Lhakhang was set on fire in 1998, the most important relic, Guru Sungjenm has suffered major damages. The relic is a very ancient one made of very thin copper. There was major concern as to how the relic could be restored. However, it has been fully repaired and plated with gold in such a way 252
that it has become a majestic icon with great splendour. As commanded by His Majesty the King, five statues each of Guru Rinpoche, Tshepame, Guru Dorji Drolo, Gongdu and Phurpa Yabyum each measuring a minimum of fifteen feet will soon be built inside the Droley Lhakhang. The total cost of reconstruction of Paro Taktshang so far has amounted to Nu.48.5 million. This includes expenditure incurred for constructing a bailey bridge over Pachu, a four-kilometer road, and a 1.6-kilometer cableway at Ramthangkha. Besides, 2,467 tola of gold equivalent to 26 kilograms has been purchased at a cost of Nu.14 million. Many people have noticed auspicious omens and signs of the reconstruction of Taktshang Lhakhang. The reconstruction works have also been progressing very well as planned and prayed for. Although over hundred labourers have been working in four very precarious sites of the Lhakhang, no single accident has occurred so far. No situation of difficulty and inconvenience has also arisen. The Hon’ble Minister said that the people of Bhutan should pray that the inauguration of the Taktshang Lhakhang could be held on the 10 th Day of the 9 th month next year. 7. Appreciation for Non-formal Education The Dagana Chimi said that the people are very thankful for the educational opportunity provided by the Royal Government through non-formal education to those who could not go to school during their childhood. Although there were only three centers for Non-formal Education at the beginning of the 8 th Five- Year Plan, there were 17 centres in Dagana today. This has brought about immense benefit particular to women who were taught the importance of health and sanitation, and maintenance of social harmony.
