The Chimis said that the religion and age-old traditional values of the country<br />

were being maligned and material inducements were being used to entice<br />

innocent villagers to convert to Christianity. If something is not done about this<br />

it will create social disharmony in the country. The people have, therefore,<br />

requested to be informed about the actions taken by the Government on the<br />

resolutions passed on this issue by the 30 th and 50 th sessions of the National<br />

Assembly.<br />

The Samtse Chimi said that the general public are greatly concerned that<br />

Christianity which was not much heard of in the past is spreading widely, and<br />

the converts not only tend to treat and view people of other faiths in a totally<br />

different manner but also make every effort to undermine the Bhutanese culture<br />

and traditions. Although the National Assembly decision prohibiting<br />

proselytization had been conveyed by the Home Ministry, it is felt that instead<br />

of implementing it some of the officials in the Dzongkhag and Dungkhags may<br />

themselves be involved in such activities.<br />

The Chimi pointed out that according to Christian beliefs there is no sin in<br />

slaughtering animals for food because, just as mushrooms grow naturally in the<br />

forests, animals are supposed to be gifts from God to feed mankind. Such<br />

values and beliefs are completely alien to the concept of cause and effect and<br />

age-old religious beliefs of the land. If proselytization of such faiths are<br />

allowed there would come a time when the sons of the soil will not be able to<br />

live in peace on the land of their forefathers. The Chimi, therefore, called for<br />

firm measures to be taken to stop the proselytization of the Christian faith in the<br />

country.<br />

The Sarpang Chimi pointed out that Buddhism and Hinduism are two religions<br />

which are followed in Bhutan in complete harmony. On the other hand the<br />

propagators of Christianity are bent on maligning and undermining the existing<br />

religious values and beliefs in the country. They resort to giving money and<br />
