The Hon’ble Home Minister said that His Majesty the King has commanded the<br />

increase in daily wage of national workforce from Nu.50 to Nu.100 on<br />

December 17, 2000 at Trashigang while celebrating the National Day.<br />

Accordingly, Kasho pertaining to the wage increase of artisans in different<br />

categories have also been issued. The wage of artisans in first category has been<br />

increased from Nu.87 to Nu.150, those in second category from Nu.75 to<br />

Nu.135, the third from Nu.62 to Nu.120, the fourth from Nu.56 to Nu.110, and<br />

the fifth from Nu.50 to Nu.100.<br />

First, the wage increases has come into effect from January 1, 2001. The<br />

increase is applicable to wage workers and artisans of the Ministries,<br />

Departments, Dzongkhags, and other organizations of the Royal Government.<br />

This is in strict conformity to the ‘Wage Rate for National Workforce, 1994’.<br />

The Hon’ble Minister said that the private organizations are however, allowed<br />

to pay wages according to their own capabilities.<br />

Second, 50% allowance of the new daily wage payable is also given to<br />

Bhutanese nationals who are skilled in any one of the Zorig Chusum and<br />

enrolled to work as the national workforce. Therefore, the artisans in the first<br />

category earn a daily wage of Nu.150 and an allowance of Nu.75 amounting to<br />

a total of Nu.225 per day. Their monthly income of Nu.6750 is equivalent to the<br />

monthly salary of a grade IX civil servant.<br />

Third, His Majesty has commanded the increases in charges for pack pony from<br />

Nu.100 to Nu.200, and of riding pony including the syce from Nu.150 to<br />

Nu.300. The new rates of riding and pack ponies have also come into effect<br />

from January 1, 2001. This rate is applicable only to civil servants and for riding<br />

and pack pony services availed by officials of the Royal Government. Rates for<br />
