will benefit the people in this life and the next besides contributing towards
enhancing peace and harmony in the country.
In keeping with the progress in the rest of the world, the implementation of
development programmes in Bhutan has brought prosperity and improved the
lives of the people throughout the country. While no one suffers from hunger or
want in the country, as misfortune and suffering are natural phenomena, there
are some cases of orphans and unfortunate children who are not able to attend
schools. The Dratshang has taken such children under its care and is educating
them in the thirteen traditional arts and crafts at Semtokha Dzong. Once they
complete their studies they will have the option of joining the Dratshang or
taking up other employment. Similarly, in the Chukha Rabdey, more than 60
boys are being educated in the Buddhist teachings under the supervision of the
Lam Neten. Similar activities are being carried out in many other Rabdeys in
the country.
The Health and Education Minister expressed his appreciation to the Dorji
Lopen and other members of the Assembly for sharing their views and thoughts
on the issue of proselytization and its impact on the country.
The Minister pointed out that the Dharma emphasizes compassion and tolerance
and teaches that other religions should not be condemned, criticized or
suppressed. If our own religion is upheld, promoted and practiced, no other
religion can threaten it. For instance, the Minister himself had from an early age
studied in a Christian missionary school abroad for about ten years. However,
he has not been converted and instead remains a firm believer in the Dharma.
This is because he was born in Bhutan, a hidden paradise blessed by Ugyen
Guru Rimpoche, and was taught by his parents to uphold and treasure his own
religion and cultural practices as he would his own life.
