The Chimis of Trashigang and Mongar said that His Holiness the Je Khenpo visited and blessed the Kurichu Hydro Power Project last year, which is being constructed with the generous assistance of the Government of India under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King. The Hon’ble Minister of Trade and Industry and the Indian ambassdor in Bhutan inaugurated the commissioning of the first turbine this year. Through the Kurichu Hydro Power Project, all the places in eastern Dzongkhags will be electrified. The income and the general living standard of the people will be improved as manufacturing industries are established and other power dependent trade and commerce flourish in the area. The Chimis said that the people of Mongar and Trashigang will never be able to forget the benevolence of His Majesty the King. The Hon’ble Minister for Trade and Industry said that His Majesty has time and again commanded that hydro-power in the country be further developed to achieve economic development and self-reliance through export of electricity. The first phase of the Basochu Hydro Power Project will be completed by October 2001. Besides, preparatory works for the second phase are also almost complete. Of the Nu.1600 million assistance provided by the Austrian government for the project, some of them are grants while others are small- interest loans. While the first turbine will generate about 22 MW of electricity, the commissioning of the second turbine will generate an additional 40 MW. Hence, the project will greatly benefit people of Wangdi Phodrang and Punakha Dzongkhags. Besides Dagana and Tsirang, the project will be able to supply electricity to other Dzongkhags as well. If a reliable source of electric power were not available, there is great difficulty in distributing power in remote areas, and in industrial estates. As such His Majesty the King has taken the lead in coordinating works for the establishment 248
of the Kurichu Hydro Power Project. Once the project has been started, His Majesty has commanded that the works be completed as early as possible. To expedite the process of generating benefits of electricity to the people of eastern Dzongkhags, and to ensure that the project is completed as soon as possible, His Majesty has visited the project site many times. The Hon’ble Minister said that he has also visited the project site on many occasions. The Hon’ble Minister said he has great privilege in reporting that as desired by His Majesty the King, the full completion of the Kurichu Hydro Power Project is almost achieved. He reported that the inauguration ceremony for the commissioning of the first turbine of the project has been held in April 2001. Efforts are underway to ensure that the second and the third turbine are commissioned towards the end of this year. Moreover, persistent efforts are made to complete the laying of transmission lines and establishment of small industries by the end of the year. Since most of the works of the project would be completed before the end of the year, the people in the eastern Dzongkhags would soon get access to electricity supply. If plans for export of electricity are not formulated, the power generated from the three turbines will not be used to the optimum level. Therefore, works to distribute electricity in India through Gelephu are already underway. Besides, the two governments have also decided on the framework and cost of electricity export. As reported long ago, electricity from the Kurichu project will be supplied to the six eastern districts. Besides there are also plans to supply electricity from the project to Trongsa and Bumthang. If sufficient capital can be secured in the 9 th Plan, Tsirang and Dagana will also be connected to the national transmission network through the Basochu Hydro Power Project. In future, if electricity supply to an industry from a powerhouse becomes difficult, it will be supplemented by power supply from other powerhouses. Preparations are set to 249
