Kuensel and the Bhutan Broadcasting Corporation. Since the honourable
members of the Assembly were seriously concerned about its security, they were
able to comprehend the news report.
The Hon’ble Minister said that the miraculous recovery of Rangjung Kharsa Pani
has been a result of the collective merit and fortune of the Bhutanese people.
Otherwise, it would have meant the loss of the life-tree of the Dratshang and the
people. The loss of such sacred relic indicates that the Bhutanese people are no
longer hesitant in resorting to such unscrupulous act of vandalism, lured by
temptations of material gains. This also indicates that the security for the nangten
is lapse and that it has been kept without serious attention.
The reason for considering Rangjung Kharsa Pani as the most sacred relic in
Bhutan has been Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal’s declaration that it is the source
of unlimited blessing. In 1616, i.e some 385 years ago, the great lama himself has
brought this relic. The Tibetans then contrived to take it back to Tibet. In order to
protect and keep it in the country, many battles were fought subsequently
between Bhutan and Tibet. The symbolic drowning of the norbu and the dances
of pazabs held during the Punakha Domchoe are dramatic re-enactment of a
legend which depicts how Rangjung Kharsa Pani and the country were saved by
Zhabdrung from Tibet’s domination. As believed, the Punakha Dzong was built
mainly to house this sacred relic.
Tsip Sangchung and all his nine accomplices who stole the Rangjung Kharsa Pani
from the Rangjoen Lhakhang inside the Utse of Punakha Dzong are all under
police custody. They are being interrogated about their crime by the High Court.
The conspiracy to steal and sell the most sacred of Bhutan’s relic is the most
criminal of offences. It is a crime that cannot be even imagined by any
Bhutanese. Therefore, everyone is highly appreciative of the High Court for its
comprehensive hearing of the criminals and for holding them under strict
custody.
