There are many people who have worked so tirelessly for a week after the loss of
the nangten was reported. Led by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the Zhung
Dratshang, Rabdeys and Goendeys in the country performed numerous Kurim to
ensure the recovery of the nangten. Under the wise guidance of His Majesty the
King, the commitment and untiring efforts of the armed forces, Dzongkhag
administrations, Dratshang Lhentshog, and the National Commission for Cultural
Affairs have helped to apprehend the accomplices. The Hon’ble Minister
extended the heartfelt gratitude of the Royal Government and the people of
Bhutan to the staff and employees of these organizations.
The Chimis of BCCI, Trashigang, Gasa, Haa and Trashi Yangtse submitted that
the loss of Rangjung Kharsa Pani which is the sacred heritage bestowed by the
Zhabdrung to the future generations of the country has caused unbearable concern
and worry to both the leaders and people of the country. However, they expressed
thankfulness for the fast recovery of the invaluable relic stating that this is the
outcome of perfect harmony that exists between the spiritual and temporal
governance. They pleaded that an independent fund be set aside to improve
security and prevent similar unfortunate incidences. While the law has to be
implemented without any leniency, very responsible caretakers have to be
appointed so that there is no lapse of security. They questioned as to why the
existing clause of awarding capital punishment is not implemented which would
help reduce the number of hard-core criminals. Many Chimis emphasized that
besides imprisoning the criminals, the stolen nangten have to be confiscated. If
the nangten cannot be recovered, the criminals must be made to pay fines
equivalent to their values. While the criminals themselves serve prison sentences,
their family and relatives sell the nangten and proudly live on the money earned.
To prevent such sacrilegious acts of vandalism, the capital punishment has to be
re-instituted, and life imprisonment itself be made more stringent.
