XX. Expression of Appreciation and Gratitude<br />

1. Appreciation for Increasing Daily Wage of National Workforce<br />

The Chimis of Trashi Yangtse, Paro, Pema Gatshel, Haa, Trongsa, Punakha,<br />

Bumthang, Gasa, Lhuntse, Thimphu, Samdrup Jongkhar, Trashigang, Samtse<br />

and Zhemgang expressed their profound gratitude to His Majesty the King for<br />

increasing the daily wage of national workforce from Nu.50 to Nu.100<br />

beginning January 1, 2001. His Majesty the King commanded the increase on<br />

the occasion of the celebration of the 93 rd National Day in Trashigang. The fee<br />

for riding pony was increased from Nu.150 to Nu.300, and that of pack pony<br />

from Nu.100 to Nu.200. Wages for artists and craftsmen of Zorig Chusum was<br />

increased by 50%, from Nu.150 to Nu.225. Besides, the daily subsistence<br />

allowance of the members of the DYT was also increased. This increases has<br />

not only enhanced the income earned by the people and improved the living<br />

standard of the national workforce but particularly benefited the promotion of<br />

the arts of Zorig Chusum. The Chimis expressed gratitude for the fact that<br />

children of poor parents are able to buy uniform and necessary stationeries<br />

while they return to school through the money they earn by working during the<br />

winter holidays.<br />

The increase in the wages has also benefited people who provide transport,<br />

porterage, riding and pack ponies to tourists and travelers in places like Gasa,<br />

Lingshi, Daifam Dungkhag, Lauri and in remote areas like Khengrig Namsum<br />

where there are no motorable roads. Furthermore, it has also enabled timely<br />

implementation of development activities. The Chimis expressed the profound<br />

gratitude of all the people of Bhutan for the great benefits accrued to them by<br />

this wage increases. They offered their prayers that His Majesty the King and<br />

the members of the Royal Family would continue to enjoy excellent health and<br />

long life. They expressed their hope that the hereditary monarchy will continue<br />
