supply electricity to 3,100 rural households in six eastern Dzongkhags within 18
months. The people of the Dzongkhags have assured their full support in
ensuring completion of the work within 18 months. Donors involved in assisting
the work may not be appreciative if electricity distribution works take a long
time. It is possible that the rural electrification programme in the 9 th plan will
come across some obstruction. The Hon’ble Minister said it is extremely vital
that everyone unites in the effort toward completing electricity distribution
works within the set time frame.
Although a budget of Nu.2500 million was estimated initially for the Kurichu
Hydro Power Project, it has crossed over Nu.7266 million. This excludes cost of
laying transmission lines from Kurichu to Lhuntse, Nganglam to Tingtibi and
from Tingtibi to Gelephu. Nevertheless, works are continuing without
considering the cost implications in view of the immense benefit it will accrue
to the people.
The cost of laying approximately 319 kilometres of transmission line will be
sought as assistance from the Government of India. The presence of ULFA-
Bodo militants in the country has posed great threat to the security and
independence of the country. Although there is great risk that the economic
development activities will be threatened, the Hon’ble Minister expressed his
hope that the project, would be completed within this year for the present and
future benefit of the people as desired by His Majesty the King.
Finally, the Hon’ble Minister said that since His Majesty is the source of peace
and happiness in the country, his long life and reign would ensure continued
prosperity. Therefore, it is important for the people to pray for the long of His
Majesty the King, and for his continued reign.
