30,000 MW of hydropower can be generated from rivers and streams in the<br />

country endowed with rich natural resources.<br />

Of the estimated capacity of 30,000 MW, only about 400 MW are currently<br />

tapped, and revenues earned from it contributes to 45% of the Gross Domestic<br />

Product. Since there are ample hydropower resources in the country, there will<br />

be adequate power facilities in rural areas. Once rural villages are electrified,<br />

the health and sanitation standard will improve. They will also have more time<br />

for work, and hence increase their output. Besides, they will be able to take<br />

advantage of various technologies, appropriate to their works. This will accrue<br />

them great benefits.<br />

Bhutan is appreciated and known by many countries in the world for her forests<br />

and nature conservation strategies. In order to further enhance conservation<br />

efforts, activities that have negative externalities on the natural environment will<br />

be reduced while hydropower generation will be promoted. There are so many<br />

benefits of hydropower to socio-economic development. His Majesty has<br />

commanded that the Ministry of Trade and Industry establish as many<br />

powerhouses as possible, and distribute electricity to as many numbers of<br />

households as possible in different Dzongkhags. After domestic requirement of<br />

power has been met, the surplus will be exported to neighbouring countries for<br />

generating income.<br />

As such, the Royal Government considers hydropower development a very<br />

important project. Everyone is aware that there are three mega hydropower<br />

projects being implemented. As soon as they are commissioned, two new mega<br />

projects have been identified for implementation.<br />

The Hon’ble Minister highlighted the importance of formulating and<br />

implementing a sustainable framework for developing hydropower and related<br />

activities in the country. Many countries do not have such a framework, and<br />
