Agriculture<br />

The agriculture sector will receive 11.79 percent of the total outlay in the<br />

coming year. Since agriculture is the major occupation of the Bhutanese people,<br />

the Royal Government is committed to increasing agricultural productivity and<br />

economic profitability. The construction of feeder roads will enable the farmers<br />

to market their produce and enhance their incomes. We hope that these efforts at<br />

making rural life more attractive will help to overcome the problems associated<br />

with rural-urban migration.<br />

The Second Eastern Zone Agricultural Project funded by an IFAD loan, is now<br />

fully operational. This project covering six Eastern Dzongkhags aims at<br />

supporting rural livelihoods by pursuing an integrated approach to agricultural<br />

development that includes rural credit schemes and infrastructure works among<br />

others.<br />

The Wang Watershed Management Project has also become operational in the<br />

past year. This project will support agriculture, forestry and livestock activities<br />

in Thimphu, Chukha, Paro and Haa Dzongkhags.<br />
