Education.<br />

The Hon’ble Secretary for Health and Education said that since the non-formal<br />

education programme was started in 1992, it has benefited 8,086 people. There<br />

are a total of 209 non-formal education centers in the country, 6,108 students<br />

and 232 teachers.<br />

The Department of Education intends to educate people of all ages who cannot<br />

read and write by 2012 through non-formal education. If all the people in the<br />

country can be educated, it will definitely be possible to realize the noble goals<br />

of Gross National Happiness propounded by His Majesty the King. The deep<br />

sense of gratitude expressed by the people of Dagana to the Royal Government<br />

is therefore, indeed very appropriate. The Hon’ble Secretary extended the<br />

appreciation of the Department of Education to them. He said that the<br />

Department will persists in its efforts to further promote the non-formal<br />

education.<br />

8. Appreciation for the Promotion of Dzongkha<br />

The Lhuntse Chimi submitted that the appointment of Dzongkha Focal Person<br />

in each Dzongkhag by the Dzongkha Development Commission to promote<br />

Dzongkha literacy since 2000 has brought about great benefits for the<br />

promotion of the national language. It lays a strong foundation for the<br />

development of the country’s unique national identity. The Chimi expressed the<br />

appreciation of the people of Lhuntse to the Royal Government for making<br />

concerted efforts in promoting the national language.<br />

The BCCI Chimi pointed out that Dzongkha is the most important among<br />

national symbols. As desired by His Majesty the King, and resolved by the<br />

National Assembly, the Royal Government gives added emphasis for the<br />
