is obvious that a corregidor’s presence had to affect both the
urban administration of justice and the internal power distribution
itself, this way implying a certain loss of political power
on the elite’s side. Nevertheless, on the other hand, when we
analyzed in the context of the porcess which leads along the
whole 15th century to certain domineeing groups’ consolidation
as elites of urban power, a corregidor’s presence could
only serve to support and guarantee the decissions tahed by
these elites, and consequently, to reenforce the oligarchy as
the sstem of power. For that reason, the corregidor’s fi gure
and the deep mening of his presence in the Castilian cities in
the 15th century still remains a problem which arouses controversy.
In what extent did his appointment serve to alter the
coruse and the politic constant features in an urban system?
Till what extent can an element imposed to it be considered?
the objetive of the present article is to try and give some answers
to these questions by analysing th relationship between
the corregidor (sending, appointment, intervention, effi ciency,
presence, etc.) and the public order. All of this in Burgos city
where a lesser number of appointed corregidores is registered
during the 15th century and where the opposition to the above
mentioned fi gure was more active. I believe that this way it will
be possible to draw the most signifi cative conclusions about
