are either too small (less than 1) or too large. Intuitively goods must
be transported at least once. Despite this, some of the goods show a
handling factor below 1. In most cases this can be explained by transport
carried out by other modes than heavy vehicles e.g. as in fuelling
pipelines. Intuitively the handling factor cannot be too large either,
because too many separate transports are not seen in reality. One
explanation to the large handling factor is that the goods transported
as products are in reality not produced (e.g. waste, metals scrap etc.).
Having found the goods transported, a distribution on different
modes and means (sizes of vehicles, own and haulage transport) is
determined.
To calculate the traffic performance two additional types of information
are needed. These are the average loads on a trip and the average
length of a trip. A multiplication of these factors with the number of
tonnes lifted leads to the vehicle kilometres. We use the vehicle kilometres
instead of the often seen tonne kilometres, because the latter
figure is an artificial figure, which cannot be observed directly as opposed
to the vehicle kilometres. The tonne kilometres in theory are
calculated as the number of tonnes multiplied by the transport length
per single trip. Using the statistics on the freight transport aggregate
