Who Can Back Up and Restore Data?<br />

To successfully back up and restore data on a computer running Windows XP Professional,<br />

you must have the appropriate permissions and user rights, as described in the<br />

following list:<br />

■ All users can back up their own files and folders. They can also back up files for<br />

which they have the Read, Read and Execute, Modify, or Full Control permission.<br />

■ All users can restore files and folders for which they have the Write, Modify, or Full<br />

Control permission.<br />

■ Any user who is assigned the Backup Files and Directories right can back up data.<br />

Any user who is assigned the Restore Files And Directories user right can restore<br />

backed up data.<br />

■ Members of the Administrators and Backup Operators groups can back up and<br />

restore all files (regardless of the assigned permissions). By default, members of<br />

these groups have the Backup Files And Directories and Restore Files And Directories<br />

user rights.<br />

<strong>Exam</strong> Tip To back up all data on a computer regardless of the assigned permissions to<br />

that data, you must use a user account that has the Backup Files And Directories user right<br />

assigned. To restore data, you must use a user account that has the Restore Files And Directories<br />

user right assigned. Members of the Administrators and Backup Operators local groups<br />

have these rights by default.
