Objective 3.4 Implement, Manage, and Troubleshoot I/O Devices
0bjective 3.4
Implement, Manage, and
Troubleshoot I/O Devices
Many of the hardware devices you might use with Windows XP Professional can be
considered I/O devices. Other objectives in this domain discuss several classes of input
and output (I/O) devices: network adapters, PC Cards, display adapters and monitors,
and disks. This objective reviews many other I/O devices including modems, smart
card readers and cards, Universal Serial Bus (USB), IEEE 1394 (FireWire), wireless
devices, and multimedia hardware. Multimedia hardware encompasses a broad array
of devices such as DVD-ROM readers, Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)
devices, scanners, digital cameras, digital video recorders, sound cards, and CD-ROM
readers and writers. From a high level, the process of installing and managing each
type of I/O device is similar: physically connect the device to the computer’s bus;
install software drivers; configure the device; maintain and troubleshoot the device as
needed. The details vary between devices, especially when comparing Plug and Play
devices to older models that do not fully support Plug and Play. Windows XP Professional
usually detects Plug and Play hardware devices and automatically installs suitable
drivers for them.
To successfully answer questions in this objective, you must be able to use the Add
Hardware Wizard and Device Manager to install, manage, and troubleshoot I/O
devices. You must also be able to use the individual device management applications
in Control Panel such as Phone and Modem Options, Scanners and Cameras, Sounds
and Audio Devices, and Wireless Link.
