Local Security Policy A combination of settings applied during startup that affect a<br />

local computer.<br />

local user account An account that allows you to log on to a specific computer to<br />

access resources on that computer.<br />

logical drive A volume created within an extended partition on a basic disk. You can<br />

format and assign a drive letter to a logical drive. Only basic disks can contain logical<br />

drives. A logical drive cannot span multiple disks.<br />

Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer One of two sublayers created by the IEEE 802<br />

project out of the data-link layer of the OSI reference model. The LLC is the upper<br />

sublayer that manages data-link communication and defines the use of logical<br />

interface points, called service access points (SAPs), used by computers to transfer<br />

information from the LLC sublayer to the upper OSI layers. See also media access<br />

control (MAC) sublayer, service access point (SAP).<br />

logical printer The software configuration that is created in Windows and displayed<br />

in Printers And Faxes.<br />

logical structure The administrative structure of Active Directory that includes<br />

domains, trees, organizational units, and objects.<br />

logon right A user right assigned to a group or an individual user account that controls<br />

the way users can log on to a system.<br />

logon script Files that can be assigned to user accounts. Typically a batch file, a<br />

logon script runs automatically every time the user logs on. It can be used to configure<br />

a user’s working environment at every logon, and it allows an administrator<br />

to influence a user’s environment without managing all aspects of it. A logon script<br />

can be assigned to one or more user accounts.<br />

loopback address A special reserved IP address that represents the local computer.<br />

LPD See Line Printer Daemon (LPD).<br />

M<br />

marker An archive attribute that marks a file as having been backed up. During<br />

incremental or differential backups, markers are used to determine whether a file<br />

has changed since the last backup.<br />

Master Boot Record (MBR) The first sector on a hard disk, this data structure starts<br />

the process of booting the computer. The MBR contains the partition table for the<br />

disk and a small amount of executable code called the master boot code.<br />

MB See megabyte (MB).<br />

Mb See megabit (Mb).<br />

Mbps See millions of bits per second (Mbps).
