Local Security Policy A combination of settings applied during startup that affect a
local computer.
local user account An account that allows you to log on to a specific computer to
access resources on that computer.
logical drive A volume created within an extended partition on a basic disk. You can
format and assign a drive letter to a logical drive. Only basic disks can contain logical
drives. A logical drive cannot span multiple disks.
Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer One of two sublayers created by the IEEE 802
project out of the data-link layer of the OSI reference model. The LLC is the upper
sublayer that manages data-link communication and defines the use of logical
interface points, called service access points (SAPs), used by computers to transfer
information from the LLC sublayer to the upper OSI layers. See also media access
control (MAC) sublayer, service access point (SAP).
logical printer The software configuration that is created in Windows and displayed
in Printers And Faxes.
logical structure The administrative structure of Active Directory that includes
domains, trees, organizational units, and objects.
logon right A user right assigned to a group or an individual user account that controls
the way users can log on to a system.
logon script Files that can be assigned to user accounts. Typically a batch file, a
logon script runs automatically every time the user logs on. It can be used to configure
a user’s working environment at every logon, and it allows an administrator
to influence a user’s environment without managing all aspects of it. A logon script
can be assigned to one or more user accounts.
loopback address A special reserved IP address that represents the local computer.
LPD See Line Printer Daemon (LPD).

marker An archive attribute that marks a file as having been backed up. During
incremental or differential backups, markers are used to determine whether a file
has changed since the last backup.
Master Boot Record (MBR) The first sector on a hard disk, this data structure starts
the process of booting the computer. The MBR contains the partition table for the
disk and a small amount of executable code called the master boot code.
MB See megabyte (MB).
Mb See megabit (Mb).
Mbps See millions of bits per second (Mbps).
