redundant array of independent disks (RAID) A standardization of fault-tolerant<br />

options in five levels. The levels offer various combinations of performance, reliability,<br />

and cost. Formerly known as redundant array of inexpensive disks.<br />

disks (RAID).<br />

Registry In Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 98,<br />

and Windows 95, a database of information about a computer’s configuration. The<br />

Registry is organized in a hierarchical structure and consists of subtrees and their<br />

keys, hives, and entries.<br />

relative distinguished name (RDN) A name that uniquely identifies an object<br />

within a particular OU.<br />

Remote Assistance A utility that allows a user to invite an administrator or other<br />

expert user to provide help remotely.<br />

Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) A security authentication<br />

protocol widely used by Internet service providers (ISPs). RADIUS provides<br />

authentication and accounting services for distributed dial-up networking.<br />

remote-boot PROM (programmable read-only memory) A special chip in the<br />

network interface card that contains the hardwired code that starts the computer<br />

and connects the user to the network, used in computers for which there are no<br />

hard disk or floppy drives. See also diskless computers.<br />

Remote Desktop A utility that allows you to control a computer from a remote location.<br />

remote installation The process of connecting to a server running Remote Installation<br />

Services (RIS), called the RIS server, and then starting an automated installation<br />

of Windows XP Professional on a local computer.<br />

Remote Installation Services (RIS) Software that stores images of Windows XP<br />

installations and makes those images available over the network.<br />

remote user A user who dials in to the server over modems and telephone lines<br />

from a remote location.<br />

removable storage device A storage device that allows you to remove either the<br />

device itself or the storage media that the device uses.<br />

replication The process of copying information from one location to another. In<br />

Active Directory, replication of directory information happens automatically<br />

between domain controllers in the same site.<br />

requester (LAN requester) Software that resides in a computer and forwards<br />

requests for network services from the computer’s application programs to the<br />

appropriate server. See also redirector.
