Glossary G-37
Request for Comments (RFC) A document that defines a standard. RFCs are published
by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and other working groups.
resource publishing The process of making an object visible and accessible to
users in a Windows 2000 domain.
resources Any part of a computer system. Users on a network can share computer
resources, such as hard disks, printers, modems, CD-ROM drives, and even the
processor.
restore point A saved snapshot of the Registry and important system and application
files that is created using the System Restore utility.
Resultant Set of Policy A tool that provides a way for you to simulate and test policy
settings applied to computers or users. It shows you the policies applied to the
object and the order in which they are applied.
RFC See Request for Comments (RFC).
rights Authorization with which a user is entitled to perform certain actions on a
computer network. Rights apply to the system as a whole, whereas permissions
apply to specific objects. For example, a user might have the right to back up an
entire computer system, including the files that the user does not have permission
to access. See also access permissions.
RIP See Routing Information Protocol (RIP).
RIS See Remote Installation Services (RIS).
RISC See Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC).
Roll Back Driver A feature in Windows XP that permits you to reinstall (roll back) a
previously installed driver. The uninstalled drivers are stored in the systemroot\system32\reinstallbackups
folder.
ROM See read-only memory (ROM).
routable protocol The protocol that supports multipath LAN-to-LAN communications.
See also protocol.
router A device used to connect networks of different types, such as those using different
architectures and protocols. Routers work at the network layer of the OSI
reference model. They can switch and route packets across multiple networks,
which they do by exchanging protocol-specific information between separate networks.
Routers determine the best path for sending data and filter broadcast traffic
to the local segment.
Routing Information Protocol (RIP) A protocol that uses distance-vector algorithms
to determine routes. With RIP, routers transfer information among other routers to
update their internal routing tables and use that information to determine the best
routes based on hop counts between routers. TCP/IP and IPX support RIP.
