Lesson 2 Managing Printers
12-15
EMF Enhanced Metafile (EMF) is the default format used by WinPrint. The instructions
for the print job are assembled on the client computer that prints the document
when the spooler processes the print job.
Text Text is a standard ANSI text format that prints using only the printer’s default
font.
How to Configure Spooling Options
Spooling is the process of saving a print job to the hard disk before sending it to the
printer. The process increases user productivity because after the job has been
spooled, the application is released, and the user can continue working while the
printing process continues in the background. Print spooling also ensures that print
jobs will be saved in the event of a computer, application, or printer failure. In addition,
when a client is printing to a printer on the network, print spooling also manages
the routing of the print job from the client to the appropriate print server.
On the Advanced tab of a printer’s Properties dialog box, select the Spool Print Documents
So The Program Finishes Printing Faster option to enable printer spooling. Select
the Print Directly To The Printer option to disable spooling. If spooling is enabled, you
need to decide whether you want the document to be spooled in its entirety before printing
(the best option for remote printers) or to start printing immediately upon receiving
the first page (the best option for local printers).
How to Move the Print Spool Folder
Windows XP uses the spool folder to store print jobs while they are waiting to be
sent to the printer. By default, Windows stores this file on the same partition as the
Windows system files, in %systemroot%\System32\spool\PRINTERS. Moving the
print spool folder to a partition different from the system partition increases free
space on the system partition.
To move the print spool folder, follow these steps:
1. From the Start menu, click Printers And Faxes.
2. In the Printers And Faxes window, click the File menu, and then click Server
Properties.
3. In the Print Server Properties dialog box, on the Advanced tab, in the Spool
Folder text box, type a new location for the print spool folder. This location
should be on a different partition from the Windows system files.
4. Click OK.

Hooray! Your file is uploaded and ready to be published.
