Windows returns you to the Disk Management tool and begins the conversion.<br />

Note If the disk contains the system or boot volume or any part of the paging file, you will<br />

have to restart the computer to complete the conversion process.<br />

You can verify that Windows completed the conversion by viewing the disk type in<br />

Disk Management, as shown in Figure 10-10.<br />

If you right-click the disk and do not see the Convert To Dynamic Disk option, one of<br />

the following conditions might exist:<br />

■ The disk has already been converted to dynamic.<br />

■ You have right-clicked a volume instead of the disk.<br />

■ The disk is in a portable computer. Portable computers do not support dynamic<br />

disks.<br />

■ There is not 1 MB of available space at the end of the disk to hold the dynamic<br />

disk database.<br />

■ The disk is a removable disk, such as a Zip disk or a detachable USB disk device.<br />

Dynamic disks are not supported on removable disks.<br />

■ The sector size on the disk is larger than 512 bytes. Windows XP Professional supports<br />

dynamic disks only on disks with a sector size of 512 bytes. The vast majority<br />

of hard disks use this sector size.<br />

How to Revert from a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk<br />

To make a dynamic disk locally accessible by an operating system other than Windows<br />

XP Professional (for example, to allow a computer running Windows 98 to access the
