Lesson 1 Configuring and Troubleshooting TCP/IP<br />

When you use the Ping command, you ping from the inside out. You want to find out<br />

where the communication and connection fail. For example, you ping the loopback<br />

address first, then a local computer on the same network, then a DNS or DHCP server<br />

on the local subnet if one exists, then the default gateway, then a remote computer on<br />

another network, and finally a resource on the Internet. You should be able to find out<br />

where the breakdown occurs by compiling the results of these checks.<br />

Note When using the Ping command, you can use either the computer name or the computer’s<br />

IP address.<br />

Pinging the Loopback Address The loopback address (127.0.0.1) is the first thing<br />

you should check when a TCP/IP problem appears. If this check fails, the TCP/IP configuration<br />

for the local machine is not correct. To ping the loopback address, follow<br />

these steps:<br />

1. From the Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and select Command<br />

Prompt.<br />

2. Type ping 127.0.0.1. A successful ping to a loopback address is shown in Figure<br />

13-6.<br />

If pinging the loopback address fails, check the configuration of TCP/IP by following<br />

these steps:<br />

1. Open the Network Connections window, right-click the configured connection,<br />

and choose Properties.
