G-18 Glossary
header In network data transmission, one of the three sections of a packet component.
It includes an alert signal to indicate that the packet is being transmitted, the
source address, the destination address, and clock information to synchronize
transmission.
hertz (Hz) The unit of frequency measurement. Frequency measures how often a
periodic event occurs, such as the manner in which a wave’s amplitude changes
with time. One hertz equals one cycle per second. Frequency is often measured in
kilohertz (KHz, 1000 Hz), megahertz (MHz, 1000 KHz), gigahertz (GHz, 1000
MHz), or terahertz (THz, 1000 GHz).
hibernate mode A state where Windows saves the current system state (including
open programs and windows) to your hard disk and then shuts the computer
down. When you restart the computer, the open programs and windows are
restored.
HID See Human Interface Device (HID).
hidden share A method of preventing users who are browsing the network from
viewing the share. If you append the dollar sign ($) to a share name, it becomes
hidden. Built-in administrative shares are examples of hidden shares.
histogram A chart consisting of horizontal or vertical bars. The widths or heights of
these bars represent the values of certain data.
host See server.
host ID The portion of an IP address that identifies the network segment on which
a host is located.
hot fixing See sector sparing.
HTML See Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
HTTP See Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP).
Human Interface Device (HID) A firmware specification standard for input and
output devices such as drawing tablets, keyboards, universal serial bus (USB)
speakers, and other specialized devices designed to improve accessibility.
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) A language developed for writing pages for
the World Wide Web. HTML allows text to include codes that define fonts, layout,
embedded graphics, and hypertext links. Hypertext provides a method for presenting
text, images, sound, and videos that are linked together in a nonsequential
web of associations.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) The method by which World Wide Web
pages are transferred over the network.
