3. Iris’ notebook computer does not have the biggest hard drive. She often works on
large sales documents and also stores many picture files of the products she sells.
She wants to compress these files to save space. What should you tell Iris to do?
You should show Iris how to use the Compressed Folders feature in Windows XP Professional.
Although she could use NTFS compression on her notebook, she cannot use NTFS compression
on the same files that she encrypts, so NTFS compression is not a good solution for Iris.
4. What utility should you teach Iris to use that might also help maximize the free
space on her hard disk?
You should teach Iris to use the Disk Cleanup utility to remove temporary and cached files from
her computer.
5. You have configured Iris’ notebook computer to connect securely via the Internet
to the company network so that Iris can access the company e-mail server and file
servers. Iris also wants to be able to access certain shared files on the company
network when she cannot connect to the network. What should you do?
You should enable the Offline Files feature on Iris’ notebook computer. While the computer is
connected to the network, you should show Iris how make a shared folder available offline. You
should also caution her that if she makes changes to a file while she is disconnected from the
network, and another user changes the same file in the actual network folder, there might be
a conflict when Iris’ notebook synchronizes her offline files.
Troubleshooting Lab
What do you suspect is the problem? What would you do to help Jonas?
Disk Management reports dynamic disks as either Offline or Missing when it cannot detect the
disk. The cause of a missing dynamic disk can be an operating system error or a problem with
the drive itself. You should first have Windows attempt to find the missing disk by selecting
Rescan Disks from the Action menu of Disk Management. If that does not resolve the issue,
you should have Jonas restart his computer. If Disk Management continues to report the disk
as missing, you should check to make sure that the drive is properly connected in the computer.
It is also possible that the drive has failed and must be replaced.
