Lesson Summary
■ Local Security Policy is applied to a specific computer and is the only type of security
policy you can use on computers that are members of a workgroup. You manage
Local Security Policy by using the Local Security Policy tool found in the
Administrative Tools folder.
■ Group Policy is applied to sites, domains, and OUs in an Active Directory environment,
and affects all computers or users that are members of the container to
which the Group Policy is assigned. When a computer running Windows XP Professional
is affected by Local Security Policy and Group Policy, those policies are
applied in the following order:
a. The LGPO is processed first.
b. GPOs linked to the site are processed.
c. GPOs linked to the domain are processed.
d. GPOs linked to the OU are processed.
■ Windows XP Professional provides two tools that help you work with policies.
The RSoP tool lets you view the actual settings in effect on a computer and the
source GPO of those settings. The Group Policy Result tool is a command-line utility
that shows you the GPOs affecting a computer.
