IEEE 802 A networking model developed by the IEEE. Named for the year and
month it began (February 1980), Project 802 defines local area network (LAN)
standards for the physical and data-link layers of the OSI reference model. Project
802 divides the data-link layer into two sublayers: media access control (MAC) and
Logical Link Control (LLC).
IEEE 802.1x authentication Authenticates users and computers for access to 802.11
wireless networks and wired Ethernet networks.
IEEE 802.11a a Wireless network standard that offers data transfer rates up to 54
Mbps and operates in the 5.8 GHz frequency.
IEEE 802.11b A wireless network standard that offers data transfer rates of 5.5 Mbps
and 11 Mbps and operates in the 2.45 GHz frequency.
IEEE 802.11g A wireless network standard that offers data transfer rates up to 54
Mbps and operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency.
IEEE 1394 Firewire A standard for high-speed serial devices such as digital video
and digital audio editing equipment.
IIS See Internet Information Services (IIS).
Image Color Management (ICM) 2.0 The API that applications use to take advantage
of color management capabilities in Windows.
incremental backup A backup type in which only selected files and folders that
have a marker are backed up. During an incremental backup, markers are cleared
so that the files are not backed up during subsequent incremental backups unless
the files change.
Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) An unofficial designation for the bus design
of the IBM Personal Computer (PC) PC/XT. It allows various adapters to be added
to the system by inserting plug-in cards into expansion slots. Commonly, ISA
refers to the expansion slots themselves; such slots are called 8-bit slots or 16-bit
slots. See also Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA).
