virus Computer programming, or code, that hides in computer programs or on the<br />

boot sector of storage devices such as hard disk drives and floppy disk drives. The<br />

primary purpose of a virus is to reproduce itself as often as possible; a secondary<br />

purpose is to disrupt the operation of the computer or the program.<br />

Visual Effects Desktop display features that look nice but often degrade a computer’s<br />

performance.<br />

volume set A collection of hard-disk partitions that are treated as a single partition,<br />

thus increasing the disk space available in a single drive letter. Volume sets are created<br />

by combining between 2 and 32 areas of unformatted free space on one or<br />

more physical drives. These spaces form one large logical volume set that is<br />

treated like a single partition.<br />

VPN See virtual private network (VPN).<br />

WAN See wide area network (WAN).<br />

WEP See Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP).<br />

wide area network (WAN) A computer network that uses long-range telecommunication<br />

links to connect networked computers across long distances.<br />

Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) A wireless encryption standard available in Windows<br />

XP Professional that provides increased security over the Wired Equivalent<br />

Privacy (WEP) standard—the other encryption standard supported by Windows<br />

XP Professional.<br />

Windows Catalog A Web site that lists all hardware and software tested for compatibility<br />

with Windows XP by Microsoft.<br />

Windows Firewall A software-based firewall built into Windows XP Service Pack 2<br />

that replaces the Internet Connection Firewall built into Windows XP prior to Service<br />

Pack 2.<br />

Windows Product Activation (WPA) The process of activating a copy of Windows<br />

with Microsoft after installation. Windows XP Professional requires that the operating<br />

system be activated with Microsoft within 30 days of installation.<br />

Windows Setup Manager A wizard-based program that allows you to quickly create<br />

a script for an unattended installation of Windows XP Professional.<br />

Windows Update An Internet-based service that allows you to download and install<br />

updates provided by Microsoft for the Windows operating system.<br />

Windows XP Service Pack 2 A major update to Windows XP that includes all the<br />

critical updates released for Windows XP to date. In addition, Service Pack 2<br />

includes a large number of new enhancements to Windows XP—enhancements<br />

aimed at increasing the default level of security for the operating system.
