The Properties dialog box for a modem always contains the following tabs (though you<br />

may see additional tabs depending on the type of modem you have installed):<br />

■ General The General tab shows basic information about the modem, whether<br />

Windows reports the modem as working or not, and whether the modem is enabled.<br />

■ Modem The Modem tab lets you control the speaker volume for the modem or<br />

turn the sound off. Many users prefer not to hear the modem each time it dials,<br />

although some users rely on hearing that sound to feel sure that their modem is<br />

working properly. The Modem tab also lets you control the maximum port speed<br />

for the modem, although because Windows negotiates the speed of the port you<br />

should not need to alter the default setting. The final option on the Modem tab lets
