distinguished name (DN) A name that uniquely identifies an object within Active<br />

Directory and contains sufficient information for a client to retrieve the object from<br />

the directory.<br />

domain A logical grouping of servers and other network resources under a single<br />

domain name. The domain is the basic unit of replication and security in an Active<br />

Directory network.<br />

domain controller A computer running Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server<br />

2003 on which the Active Directory service is installed. The domain controller<br />

stores a complete replica of the domain directory.<br />

forest A grouping or hierarchical arrangement of one or more domain trees that form<br />

a disjointed namespace but can share a common schema and Global Catalog.<br />

Global Catalog The central repository of information about objects in a tree or forest.<br />

globally unique identifier (GUID) A 128-bit number, guaranteed to be unique, that<br />

is assigned to an object created in Active Directory.<br />

logical structure The administrative structure of Active Directory that includes<br />

domains, trees, organizational units, and objects.<br />

namespace Any bounded area in which a name can be resolved.<br />

object A distinct named set of attributes that represents a network resource.<br />

organizational unit (OU) A container used to organize objects within a domain into<br />

logical administrative groups. OUs provide a way to create administrative boundaries<br />

within a domain.<br />

relative distinguished name (RDN) A name that uniquely identifies an object<br />

within a particular OU.<br />

replication The process of copying information from one location to another. In<br />

Active Directory, replication of directory information happens automatically<br />

between domain controllers in the same site.<br />

site A combination of one or more IP subnets connected by a highly reliable and fast<br />

link to localize as much network traffic as possible.<br />

tree A hierarchical arrangement of one or more domains that share a common<br />

schema and a contiguous namespace.<br />

user principal name (UPN) A “shorthand” name representing the user account and<br />

the DNS name of the tree where the user account object resides.
