CATO, MARCUS PORCIUS
LIFE
b. at Tusculum 234 B.C. of peasant stock; served in Hannibalic War (217/216 B.C.,
Campania; 214 B.C., military tribune in Sicily; 207 B.C., distinguished conduct at battle
of Sena). Impressed the aristocratic L. Valerius Flaccus with whose help he embarked
on a political career. Quaestor in Sicily 204 B.C., C. is supposed to have been responsible
for bringing Ennius to Rome in 203/202 B.C. from Sardinia. Plebeian aedile
199 B.C., praetor 198 B.C. in charge of Sardinia; reputation as a just and strict governor,
expelling usurers and cutting the 'perks' which as praetor he could have exploited
(Jeges Porciae de prouocatione and de sumptu prouinciali may be dated to this year).
Consul 195 B.C. (with Valerius Flaccus) he opposed the repeal of the Lex Oppia which
limited the public display by women of family wealth, and took charge of Spain, where
he behaved with severity towards the Spanish tribes and cultivated his reputation for
frugality and efficiency. In 191 B.C. as military tribune with Valerius Flaccus under
Acilius Glabrio the consul he fought at Thermopylae and conducted an important
diplomatic mission to Athens and other Greek cities. In 190 B.C. prosecuted Q.
Minucius Thermus, the first known in a long succession of prosecutions aimed at the
then dominant Scipionic faction, and supported charges of peculation against Acilius
Glabrio who, as C. himself, was a candidate for the censorship of 189 B.C. This time he
failed, but in the sequel he was a central figure in the now obscure manoeuvres which
led to the downfall of the Scipios in politics (188 B.C.). Exploiting this and other shocks
