APPENDIX OF AUTHORS AND WORKS
list shows those datings, or approximate datings, on which there is more or less general
agreement. Cons, ad Marciam: within reign of Caligula (37-41). De ira 1-2: 41,
between accession of Claudius and banishment of S. How much later bk 3 may be is
still disputable. Cons, ad Helviam: early in S.'s exile-period; probably not later than
summer 43. Cons, ad Polybium: in exile-period, before Polybius' death in 47; probably
in summer 43. De brevitate vitae {Dial. 10): not later than 49; probably in exile-period.
De beneficiis: between Nero's succession (September 54) and 64. De dementia: 56.
Naturales quaestiones: between S/s retirement from public affairs in 62, and his death
in 65. Some reasons to put completion of work no later than 64. Epistulae morales:
between S.'s retirement and death.
LOST WORKS: Titles and fragments last printed in full by Haase, under Texts
below. Discussed by Miinscher, under Studies (1) below. Four of them investigated by
M. Lausberg, Untersuchungen %u Senecas Fragmenten (Berlin 1970). Representative
selection follows: biography of Seneca the Elder, De vita patris; two geographical
and ethnographical treatises, De situ et sacris Aegyptiorum and De situ Indiae; four
physical treatises, De motu terrarum volumen (written by S. as a iuuenis, Q. Nat. 6.4.2),
De lapidum natura, De piscium natura, and De forma mundi; published speeches (cf.
Quint. 10.2.129 and Haase ill 437-40); moral or philosophical works, De amicitia,
Exhortationes, De immatura morte liber, De matrimonio, Moralis philosophiae libri
(general systematization of his moral doctrines, in progress c. 62—5; cf. Epist. 106.2,
108.1, 109.17), De officiis, De remediis fortuitorum, De superstitione dialogus; treatise of
unknown title which S. dictated on his deathbed, subsequently pubd (Tac. Ann.
15-63-7). For conjectures as to dates of lost works see Munscher, under Studies (1)
below (results summarized 142—3).
DUBIOUSORSPURIOUS: Epistulae ad Novatum (Haase fr. 109; cf. Munscher
44 n.2) and ad Caesonium (Haase fr. 109, Munscher 63), and a tract on shorthand
symbols (Haase fr. 128). A number of spurious works circulating in the middle ages
are extracts from, or rehashes of, extant Senecan treatises; such is the De paupertate
(Haase in 459—61). Most notorious of the certainly spurious compositions is the
Epistulae Senecae ad Paulum Apostolum et Pauli Apostoli ad Senecam (ibid. 476—81);
ed. C. W. Barlow (Rome 1938); see also K. M. Abbott, 'Seneca and St. Paul', in (ed.)
D. C. Richel, JVege der JForter. Festschrift fur Wolfgang Fleischhauer (Cologne-
Vienna 1978) 119—31, bibliography 119 n. 1.
TRAGEDIES: Transmitted as a group of almost bare texts: the MSS contain no
arguments to the plays, no lists of dramatis personae, and no commentaries. The two
recensions into which they divide do not agree on the order or number of the plays in
the canon, or even on some of their titles. These two recensions are conventionally
known as 'E' (after the recension's main representative, the Codex Etruscus, c. A.D.
1100) and 'A' (some 300 MSS; most dating from Italian renaissance; none earlier than
