physical treatises, De motu terrarum volumen (written by S. as a iuuenis, Q. Nat. 6.4.2),
De lapidum natura, De piscium natura, and De forma mundi; published speeches (cf.
Quint. 10.2.129 and Haase ill 437-40); moral or philosophical works, De amicitia,
Exhortationes, De immatura morte liber, De matrimonio, Moralis philosophiae libri
(general systematization of his moral doctrines, in progress c. 62—5; cf. Epist. 106.2,
108.1, 109.17), De officiis, De remediis fortuitorum, De superstitione dialogus; treatise of
unknown title which S. dictated on his deathbed, subsequently pubd (Tac. Ann.

DUBIOUSORSPURIOUS: Epistulae ad Novatum (Haase fr. 109; cf. Munscher
44 n.2) and ad Caesonium (Haase fr. 109, Munscher 63), and a tract on shorthand
symbols (Haase fr. 128). A number of spurious works circulating in the middle ages
are extracts from, or rehashes of, extant Senecan treatises; such is the De paupertate
(Haase in 459—61). Most notorious of the certainly spurious compositions is the
Epistulae Senecae ad Paulum Apostolum et Pauli Apostoli ad Senecam (ibid. 476—81);

TRAGEDIES: Transmitted as a group of almost bare texts: the MSS contain no
arguments to the plays, no lists of dramatis personae, and no commentaries. The two
recensions into which they divide do not agree on the order or number of the plays in
the canon, or even on some of their titles. These two recensions are conventionally
known as 'E' (after the recension's main representative, the Codex Etruscus, c. A.D.
1100) and 'A' (some 300 MSS; most dating from Italian renaissance; none earlier than
