FLORUS, JULIUS or L. ANNAEUS
LIFE
Unknown, unless the same as P. Annius Florus (next entry). The Bambergensis calls
him Julius Florus, other MSS L. Annaeus Florus: both names suspect. Internal
evidence (praef. 8 and 1.5.5—8) suggests c. A.D. 140 as earliest time for his writing,
and admits a considerably later date. Occasional praise of Spain (e.g. 1.22.38) may
indicate connexions with that province.
WORKS
Epitoma de Tito Livio bellorum omnium annorum DCC (so the MSS): this title, ancient
but probably not F.'s, ill represents the contents; perhaps tabella (praef. 3) figured in
F.'s title. B, marginally more authoritative than other MSS, divides the work into two
books, the rest into four. The two books seem rather long, but this division makes
some sense and may be tolerated.
