LIFE
b. in Po valley possibly c. 109 B.C.; probably a native of Ticinum. Associated with
Catullus (Cat. 1), Atticus and Cicero, d. after 27 B.C. Praenomen unknown. Sources:
Nepos 25.19.1 (birth); 25.13.7 (Atticus); Pliny, N.H. 3.127, 10.60; Pliny, Epist.
3.28.1 (birthplace and death); Macr. Sat. 2.1.14 (Cic.'s letters to him); Fronto p. 20N
(N.'s role as editor of Cic).
WORKS
(1) De viris illustrious (at least sixteen books, GLK I 141.13). Extant: De excellentihus
ducibus exterarum gentium (title not quite certain); Cato and Atticus from De historicis
Latinis. Books De Romanorum imperatoribus (23.13.2), De historicis Graecis (10.3.2),
and De regibus (21.1.1) are certain; categories De poetis, De oratoribus and De grammaticis
are likely. First pubd probably 35/34 B.C. (2j.12.1f., 19.2); 2nd ed. before 27.
