Erotopaegnia (Love-plays) on erotic <strong>and</strong> mythological themes in (at least) six books:<br />

Charisius 2, p. 265. 12 B (GLK 1 204.16). Other titles are probably those of-works<br />

in the collection: cf. Charisius 4, p. 376. 1-2 B (GLK 1 288.6). Nearly thirty fragments<br />

survive in a variety of metres.<br />

Dates probably 84-54 B.C.; b. in Verona. Jerome (CAron.) gives dates as 87-57, but C.<br />

was certainly alive in 5 5 (Pompey's consulship, 113.2; porticus Pompeii, 5 5.6; invasions<br />

of Britain, 11.12, 29.4, cf. 45.22). At Rome had affair with a Clodia (called Lesbia in<br />

his poems), possibly the elder sister of P. Clodius <strong>and</strong> wife of Q. Metellus Celer.<br />

Visited Asia Minor 57/56 as member of entourage of C. Memmius, governor of<br />

Bithynia- Sources: own poems; Apul. Apol. \o (Lesbia's real name); Suet. Iul. 73<br />

(Caesar entertained by C.'s father). On identity of Clodia see T. P. Wiseman, Catullan<br />

Questions (Leicester 1969) 5 off.<br />
