The use of proclitics in sentences is then seen to be<br />

purely a syntactic requirement. Verbs like dona 'to stand,'<br />

etc. in independent clauses must be made to agree with their<br />

subjects. The animacy condition of the subject is thus not<br />

important for proclitics.<br />

However, this is not entirely the case when agreement<br />

is marked with enclitics. Here, the animacy condition of the<br />

subject is still important. Generally, enclitics are used in<br />

sentences with animate subjects. In sentences with inanimate<br />

subjects, enclitics can also be used under conditions<br />

discussed below. In sentences such as the following,<br />

however, the use of enclitics is unacceptable.<br />

'This pillar is big.'<br />
