' I do not know what that person said.'<br />

What is relativized here is something which urueno nvan<br />

'that person' had said but the person who reported it could<br />

not hear clearly. So he used peue 'what' to represent what<br />

he had not heard clearly. This is also the case in English.<br />

What is unusual is the fact that peue. which functions as a<br />

head NP, is not a free word, but rather a morpheme belonging<br />

to the verb tupeue.<br />

Among the verbs listed in 2.2.1.4, nine can precede a<br />

relative clause and contain a nominal morpheme that can<br />

function as the head NP. The nine verbs are:<br />

tusoe 'to know who'<br />

tupeue 'to know what'<br />

tupat 'to know where'<br />

tuho 'to know to where'<br />

turi 'to know which one'<br />

tutoh 'to know which one'<br />

tudum 'to know the number'<br />

tudit 'to know the number'<br />
