NP which is compared, but rather the details described by<br />

the adverbs or adjectival adjuncts, such as itam 'black' in<br />

qeu-cet itam '3r-paint black (painted black).' (132), for<br />

example, means that the pieces of wood which were split into<br />

four parts are already dry, implying that there are other<br />

pieces of wood which were not split into four, and they are<br />

not dry yet.<br />

While (132) is a good sentence, (133) is not. It is not<br />

acceptable if the adverb bak mienq 'on the cheek' is<br />

stressed (as marked here with the symbol (*)). bak mienq is<br />

the only locational adverb that can modify the verb tampa<br />

'to slap.' Since bak mienq is the only place tampa is<br />

performed, it does not make sense to imply that 'teacher<br />

Adam' also performs tampa to another child, but not bak
