2.1 Nouns<br />

Nouns are such words as kayee 'wood,' ureueng 'person,'<br />

kameng 'goat,' peunaioh 'food,' eleumee 'science,' and all<br />

words used to name things and ideas. Other important words<br />

that belong to nouns are pronouns, titles, measure nouns,<br />

classifiers, and onomatopoetic words. The first four<br />

sections below will briefly deals with all of these words,<br />

with the exception of onomatopoetic words•! Noun derivation<br />

is discussed in the last section.<br />

2.1.1 Pronouns<br />

Acehnese pronouns make distinctions in.age and<br />

politeness. In some literature, the term 'familiar' is used<br />

for some pronouns, such as free 'I (vulgar),' kah 'you (for<br />

children),' and 1ih 'he/she. The term 'familiar' for<br />

Acehnese is misleading. This term is appropriate for English<br />

and many other Indo-European languages. In these languages,<br />

'familiar' has a positive sense, something preferred in a<br />

certain situation. When two persons have become close<br />

friends, they will use familiar terms towards each other,<br />

they will call each other by his first name. In a language<br />

that distinguishes between familiar and polite form of<br />

pronouns, such as French £a and vous. the familiar form is<br />
