object exists in Acehnese. There is some evidence showing<br />

the existence of this phenomenon. But before showing this,<br />

it is important to examine some facts about raising to<br />

object in English, because the idea of raising to object has<br />

its origin in English.<br />

The phenomenon called "raising to object" in English is<br />

only found in a structure with a non-Equi-subject<br />

complement. This rule lifts the subject of such a complement<br />

and places it in the object position of the main clause.<br />

Among the verbs that take these complements are believe.<br />

consider, hear, know, claim, etc. (in Postal's (1974) terms,<br />

"B-verbs"), and want and wish (Postal's "W-verbs"). Raising<br />

to object is governed by these verb classes.<br />

To find out whether or not raising to object exists in<br />

Acehnese, we need to consider sentences with verbs<br />

equivalent to these English verbs. But to avoid any<br />

complication with keumeung and neuk. two verbs which mean<br />

want but are different from it in structure, we will limit<br />

ourselves to the data containing B-verbs. But since the<br />

purpose of this section is only to show that something<br />

similar to raising to object exists in Acehnese, the<br />

examples examined here are limited to very few verbs.<br />

Consider the following examples with the verbs anggap<br />

'to consider.'<br />

113. a) Guru geu-anggap (nyang) geutanyoe salah.<br />

Teacher 3r-consider that weinc guilty<br />

'The teacher considers that we are guilty.'
